What is an FPC? Part2 – Single and Double sided FPC

Column

Single-Sided FPC

A single-sided FPC is constructed with a single layer of copper foil laminated onto one side of a polyimide film. This is the most basic structure that fully takes advantage of the FPC’s signature features-extreme thinness and flexibility.
It is commonly used in applications where the FPC needs to retain a folded shape, such as the connection between LCD panels and mainboards. It also offers excellent low spring-back characteristics, which helps reduce power consumption in motor drive systems for devices like hard disk drives (HDDs), where repeated bending is required.

Double-Sided FPC

Double-sided FPCs have two layers of copper foil-one on each side of the polyimide base film. Compared to single-sided FPCs, they are generally thicker and less flexible. However, with careful selection of materials and structural design, their performance can be brought close to that of single-side types.
When using the same design rules (such as conductor width and trace pitch), a double-sided FPC can reduce the overall board size by approximately half compared to a single-sided layout.
This type of FPC also allows for reverse-side (front-to-back) routing, crossover wiring, controlled impedance design for high-speed transmission, and higher density wiring and component mounting.
