What is an FPC? Part 3 – Multilayer FPC and Double side access FPC
ColumnMultilayer FPC
Multilayer FPCs feature three or more layers of conductive circuitry. These high-density circuit boards integrate rigid sections—where components are mounted—with flexible sections used for routing leads or accommodating areas that require repeated bending.
One of their key advantages is design flexibility. Various structural configurations are possible, and in many cases, only certain areas are multilayered to preserve the core benefits of FPCs. This approach allows manufacturers to incorporate innovative ideas and deliver highly customized FPC solutions.
Because the circuit board and flexible cable portions are integrated, there’s often no need for separate connectors, helping save space and improve overall reliability.

Double side access FPC
Although this is technically a single-layer FPC with just one conductive layer, parts of the base film are removed to expose the conductor from both the top and bottom sides.
In a standard single-sided FPC, electrical contact is only possible from cover film side. However, with this double side access design, you can make electrical connections from either side of the FPC.
It maintains the same thin and flexible profile of a single-sided FPC while offering additional versatility for layout and interconnection, making it ideal for tight or complex applications where contact from both sides is required.
