What is an FPC? Part1 – Abstract

Column

FPC stands for Flexible Printed Circuit. As the name suggests, it’s a circuit board that is soft and bendable-unlike traditional rigid boards. Instead of hard materials, FPCs use flexible insulating films such as polyimide, which makes them extremely thin and easy to bend or fold freely.

Thanks to this flexibility, FPCs can be routed through tight spaces, support three-dimensional wiring, and even handle dynamic or moving connections. Compared to rigid boards, they are significantly lighter, yet they still allow for component mounting-just like their rigid counterparts.

FPCs are widely used in compact, lightweight electronic devices where space and weight savings are critical. Common applications include smartphones, digital cameras, medical equipment, and automotive modules, among many others.
